WHO started the America’s Cup?
In 1851 the Hundred Guinea Cup was offered by the Royal Yacht Squadron of Great Britain as a race around the Isle of Wight. The cup was won by the America, a 100-foot schooner from New York City. Subsequently, the competition has been called the America’s Cup ever since.

Thank you for teaching me about the America’s Cup. I didn’t know much and I found your answers to be very informative. I didn’t realise the race as old or that it started in the UK. I had assumed it was started by rich americans and that is why it was called the America’s Cup. Isn’t it great having your assumptions challenged by facts?
